a little update

i must have been in denial and too heavily medicated to realize what had happened to me. suddenly it was Thursday and i was out of pain medication. then the bike shop called to tell me about my frame and it finally hit me. i was involved in a serious accident.

by Friday, it felt like there was a loud 80′s rock band playing inside of my head. this was annoying even for someone who loves 80′s rock music. i had scheduled an appointment with my primary care physician for Monday. i called to check if he could see me earlier. he was able to squeeze me in, but i would have to pick up the ER results myself.

my doctor reviewed the results and was shocked that i wasn’t given stronger pain killers and/or a muscle relaxer at the hospital. apparently, the ct scan showed signs of muscle spasms around my neck area.

he x-rayed my left knee several times. still no signs of damage. yay ! then he injected some pain medication directly into my bloodstream. i went straight home after that and slept for a few hours.

i am now on really strong pain medication – the kind that makes you feel high. Jose and i had dinner with a very good friend of mine last night and i was completely out of it. i was very embarrassed, but glad to be pain-free. i also have muscle relaxers which have helped with the muscle spasms in my leg.

overall, i am doing much better. my face has healed very nicely and i hope the rest of my body will be fine by the end of the week. i’ve been looking at some alternative races i could do once i feel better. i can’t wait to start training again !!

I’m sooooooooo sorry you have to go through this… you are being such a good sport and i’m so happy to see that, truly.

Keep your spirits up and take time to heal and prepare for your future, which of course includes getting ready and set to go at the race that will be THE ONE for you! The one you are destined to be a part of.

I am so impressed with your attitude. GO, you!!

thanks, K. that’s what i keep telling myself. this one wasn’t meant to be. i would have preferred a pretty sign in the sky, but i’ll take this and learn from it. :-)

It’s good to hear you’re optomistic about continuing your training. I think it’s difficult for injuries to keep athletes down.

I came across this article right after reading about your crash.

hey Ian. thanks ! that is a great article. Florida’s gotta be the least bike-friendly state in the US.

it’ll take more than this to keep me down – even if i have to move to a different state. i am in love with the sport.

Like K said, it sounds like you’ve got a great attitude. I know this must be incredibly frustrating (not to mention painful). Maybe we should do something like the Libertarians did a few years ago and get a whole bunch of outdoorsy athletes together and take over a state (or a county at least). Boulder might be a good place to start our tri-revolution. We could ban cars from most of the roads, allowing them only for long distance transportation of bikes, kayaks, and canoes. Cycylists would always have the right of way. Anyway, back to real life. I hope you recover well and quickly. I totally recommend the new Pirates movie if you need something silly and fun to do for a few hours!

Orangina, you are too funny ! i LOVE your idea !! thanks for the movie suggestion. i have a not-so-secret crush on Johnny Depp (who doesn’t ?) so it’s definitely on my “must see” list !

Boy, I’m glad muscle spasms are the extent of it. Really glad there’s nothing broken. Hope you heal fast!
