2006 Kids In Distress Ride

December 3, 2006 6 comments

the sun may set in the west, but it rises beautifully in Ft Lauderdale.

it was a great day for the Kids In Distress Inlet Challenge Bike Ride. my friend Safari came to my apartment and we rode to the start line together. we arrived just in time to see the sunrise.

Bill (an awesome cyclist i know from spinning class) arrived a few minutes later. the 3 of us rode together most of the time – except when a bus flew by and almost clipped us which set Bill off. he chased the bus down for about a mile, caught up to it, put his bike in front of it and proceeded to give the bus driver a piece of his mind. the whole ride was worth THAT moment.

overall, we had a pretty sweet ride even if the weather couldn’t make up its mind. first it was sunny, cool and beautiful. then it was blistering hot. then we got caught up in a crazy wind/sand storm that made us slow WAY down partly because of the wind and partly because we could barely see with all sand in our eyes. then it POURED like it only pours in Florida – something Bill describes as a “micro-burst.” so we stopped at a coffee shop to dry off, warm up and chat. then the sun came out and it was blistering hot again. that’s Florida for you kids !

my knee hates me right now, but it was SO worth it. i’m looking forward to doing it all again next year. :-D
