2007 Kids In Distress Ride

December 3, 2007 2 comments

i set out to do the Kids in Distress ride yesterday. i did this ride last year while i was still injured from a previous crash, so i was only able to do the shortest distance. feeling very optimistic, i signed up for the full century distance this year.

about 30 miles into the ride, a car peeled out… somewhere. i was riding in a pack, right on the wheel of the guy in front of me. there were riders to my left, right and probably behind me. everyone panicked. the guy in front of me slammed on his brakes and i went down hard. this wreck wasn’t as bad as last year’s. i was able to not only walk away, but ride most of the way back. Geoff drove me the rest of the way home. i felt bad about calling him, but the ONE rider who stopped to see if i was OK insisted that i call someone. i was riding my Madone. i’m not sure if there’s any real damage yet. i am planning to take her into the shop this week. i am also going to see my doctor tomorrow as i cannot lift my left arm. i’m sure there’s nothing broken, but i want to be sure everything is OK.

as for the Kids in Distress ride, I am afraid this will be my last stab at it. i know many riders who avoid this event because it is dangerous and not very well marshaled. i am subscribing to their school of thought. in the future, i will focus my training energy on the MS ride and perhaps get back into the marathon spirit during this time of year.
