A woman sitting across the bar from us last night kept staring at us. When she saw me playing with my phone camera, she came over and asked if she could take a picture of us. She told us how to pose and took about 20 different photos, trying to get a good shot. She had shaky hands and the photos were mostly a blur until Geoff suggested she place the phone on the bar for stability. This is the clearest photo she managed. It was kinda bizarre, but entertaining. She was very nice.
We walked to a body piercing studio after dinner. I wanted a permanent souvenir of this wonderful city. Unfortunately, the girl had left for the day. On our way back, we decided to stop for a drink at a pub we noticed had live music. There were two guys playing acoustic guitars and some of Geoff’s all time favorites: Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Cat Stevens songs among others. The pub had really good beer on tap, so we thought it was perfect. Then the guys introduced themselves. It turns out one of them is a fellow Kiwi who grew up on the same road as Geoff – Saddleback Rise. Geoff spoke to him during the break and then he played some NZ tunes. It was awesome ! Tomorrow we go back home. Darn.
Geoff, the dessert expert, thought this wasn’t the best dessert we’ve had here. It was excellent by any other standard but not by what we’ve come to expect from Live. He thought it needed something like ginger to give it a bit of a kick. Live has spoiled us !!
After dating for two years, Geoff finally feels comfortable enough to show me the software his company sells. ![]()
We walked to The Rex, a jazz and blues bar, after dinner. Here’s a picture to prove that Ian does actually exist. :-p
We had dinner with Ian at Fressen last night. It was SO good. Everything on the menu is tapas-style, designed for sharing. We enjoyed sharing six different dishes which I didn’t get pictures of, but trust me, they were all yummy. I couldn’t resist taking a picture of the dessert though. It was awesome !
It’s been an emotionally charged week. On Monday, I found out that the position of my boss and longtime friend was eliminated. He’s a brilliant guy and I know companies will be bidding for his talent, but it’s the injustice, lack of forethought and crappy business tactics that get to me.
Today, my mom called bearing more bad news. My dad was laid off. It’s a sensitive time for them to lose their medical coverage, so she’s worried.
Times like this make me want to hide from the world, so I try to think of the positive things in my life. Today, for example, the company I work for announced that we’ll be having a Thanksgiving Potluck this year. Everyone was asked to bring a dish. One of my co-workers replied to the organizer with this comment:
I talked to the corporate services team and I think we want to bring in vegan dishes.
Can you sign me up for vegan pralined sweet potatoes?
I was beyond touched and thankful for their thoughtfulness.
We’re trying a pizzeria chain in Toronto that has vegan pizza options, organic beer and wine and vegan desserts to boot.
Energy bowl for Geoff and Buddha bowl for me. It’s been a hectic day. I didn’t have time to blog our lunch because we got back from picking it up just in time for a company meeting to discuss something that ripped my heart apart yesterday. The worst part is that I will be charged roaming charges for a one hour call that left me feeling senseless. Then I ate my food cold. Now it’s time for a long, hard run.
