Home Stretch
I didn’t post anything after my 16th adjustment because I was feeling disappointed with my progress and worried that my treatment would end with my bite being in worse shape than when I started this ordeal. Here’s a shocker: I tend to worry a lot. Fortunately, I am feeling much more hopeful after my latest adjustment. My target date "on paper" is June 9th, but the ortho quickly burst that bubble last Thursday. However, he did say "next time (June 28th) we’ll analyze midline for completion." Music to my ears. He hasn’t given me a new target date, but I’m assuming I have a few more months to go. My midline is pretty centered right now and the elastics seem to be working. YAY !
Adjustment 16 was pretty basic. Just got a new chain on top and had to start using new elastics that go across my mouth. Fortunately, I only have to wear them at night because I can hardly speak when I’m wearing them.
This time, the ortho removed the top wire and made some bends in it to bring up my left eye tooth which was significantly lower than the rest of my teeth. He also added a bend to the right side of the wire, but I can’t tell what that was for. He also gave me stronger nighttime elastics because I told him the ones I had weren’t strong enough. No pain, no gain, right ? Speaking of pain, this adjustment was VERY painful. It reminded me of those first adjustments when I wanted to bash my head against a wall. On the plus side, the new elastics seem to be working nicely and I’m more confident that I’ll have a good bite after all this is over.

Smashed Pea and Farro Soup
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small yellow onion, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
2 stalks celery, diced
1 cup split peas
4 cups vegetable broth
4 cups water, divided
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp fresh parsley
1/4 tsp fresh thyme
1/4 cup farro (or barley)
1 medium carrot, diced
fresh ground pepper, to taste
fresh oregano, for garnish
1. In a large stock pot, sauté onion and garlic in olive oil over medium heat until onions are translucent. Stir in the celery and cook for another minute.
2. Add the peas, broth and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and stir in the lemon juice, sugar, salt, mustard, parsley and thyme. Cover and simmer for about 45 minutes or until peas are soft.
3. While the soup is cooking, combine farro and 3 cups water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for about 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
4. Puree split pea mixture until smooth with either a handheld or standard blender. Pour back into the stock pot.
5. Add cooked farro to split pea mixture. Stir in the carrots and fresh ground pepper. Simmer for another 15 minutes or until carrots are tender, stirring occasionally. Adjust water if necessary.
6. Let soup sit for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish each serving with fresh oregano. Enjoy !
